My VW TDI blew a lot of black smoke when the biodiesel started to gell up. I got pulled over trying to limp home on side streeets. I would make sure you have a clean fuel filter and a clean water separator. On my 870 there is water separator under the fuel tank and the fuel filter is up by the injector pump.

There is a filter on order. Good point and we are thinking the same thing.

No. That's just eliminated the air filter itself as a cause.

Hmmmmm..........I figured the air flowed thru the filter then got boosted by the turbo then went into the intake manifold. I figured disconnecting at the manifold would eliminate the entire Turbo as a cause. Maybe we don't understand the intake/turbo system. We'll take a closer look.

May be my mis.read of your post #8. Did you mean 'unfiltered' or 'unboosted' air?
Which side of the turbo did you disconnect?

Sorry for the slow reply............I meant both unfiltered and unboosted. By disconnecting the intake at from the intake manifold I was trying to prove the problem wasn't a restriction of airflow in the intake. In hindsight I don't think we really proved anything because we don't know this tractor will run even semi normal without boost. The more I think about it I'm thinking it probably won't. We're thinking about trying to introduce some compressed air into the intake to see if we can improve the rpm the engine will achieve. We aren't under the illusion we can get it to make full power or really run good........but we think if we can see an improvement in performance with a pressure boost it would prove to us the problem is the turbocharger. Thoughts?

Does anyone know if new or reman turbo's are available for the 1050? I'm not seeing anything online and it is starting to worry me. I swear when I was working on my 950 (not turbocharged) that I stumbled on a turbocharger for the 1050 for $400.00 or $500.00 but I sure can't find it now.

If anyone knows a source, please post.

Thanks.

The JD1050 came with a airtank...if the turboseals is leaking oil will accumilate in that tank.

It will run just fine, sitting there with the hose off.Mine burns just as clean with or without turbo .Just tried it to find out.

How good were you at explaining your situation to the officer?

Update on this thread:

My friend that owns this 1050 sent me a text last night that the muffler was plugged. Corrosion.

At one point or another we had convinced ourselves it was likely the turbo or the injection pump. The real cause is a reminder of how simple these engines really are and to always look at the simple things first. Either one of us should have thought to check this before anything else was done.........yet we overlooked the obvious. The good news is that it's a cheap fix.
