Anyone have a dark colored metal roof in a hot climate?

The 13' x 26' cover over the back porch is dark brown steel with white underneath. I don't feel any radiated heat standing under it when it's a hundred degrees plus in the sun. What I do notice is the racket that even a light rain makes. Before using steel for a roof I'd look carefully for a way to damp out the noise. Maybe a layer of rigid foam underneath would help, but the manufacturer of the roof would know for sure. And if you're in wildfire country, pay close attention to how the openings at the end of the steel sheets are closed off. For sure don't want embers (or anything else for that matter) getting up under there.

I want to upgrade to metal. Asking for advice from you wisemen...

All my building roofs, except one are metal. The barn, milk house, cottage and four bigly outbuildings are standing seam and over 100 years old. I just finished up painting the outbuildings this summer. Silver.

The farm house is a remodel. The old roof got trashed. And a new standing seam roof put in it's place. Silver again.

I was never crazy about silver as a color, and the older buildings sort of forced my hand, but it is easier to paint, paint is more readily available, paint types (fiber) are more readily available, and other people actually can paint it with zero issues on matching and volume. LOL.

The heat dissipation is enormous. In the summer, I do not even think about working on or near the roofs. In the farm house, even the wood underlayment from the attic is warm to the touch. I made the mistake once of getting up on the roof during the summer. When I sat my butt down, I got right off the roof in a bad way. LOL.

My silver roof on the farm house came rolled and not a very high gloss look to it. So, it has weathered well these past ten years. It still looks great.

Insurance adjuster is going to help us replace the roof. Thank God. I want to upgrade to metal. Asking for advice from you wisemen. Galvalume has 20 year warranty but painted has 40 year. Shiny would look best but shine wears off after a few years. White would be best choice to lower attic temp, but forrest green would look better. I plan to blow in more insulation while some of the deck is off. Anyone have a dark colored metal roof in a hot climate? Would that be stupid? Would green last as long as white?

Have a freind visiting for the weekend.

Y'all have a blessed day.

Here is our 7 year old galvalume roof. It weathered to look like it is painted gray. IMG_0279.JPG

The raised seams still shine because they only get about 30% of the suns rays.

This roof is called raised seam and it comes in a roll and the roofers put it trough a bending machine for the seams and cut it to the desired length.

A green would look good but what will it weather fade to? Can it be repainted?

Does the warranty cover color change. We had dark brown metal siding in Houston and it turned into a green/browninsish army color.

The darker colors will fade from sun and UV Kyle.

If I had to do mine over again, I would have used green for my barn roof. I used the plum color to coordinate colors with my house shutters. Lots of barns use silver or white on the roof, and color sides.

I have seen a flag blue roof turn to to baby blue and a red roof turn pink.:yuck:

I haven't seen what shade a dark green will weather to.

Thanks for all the roof info. Looks like white or galvalume. Green will turn chalky, I believe. They supposedly use Kynar based paint for most brands. I wonder if somebody has developed a repaint method?

RNG, my roofer recommends not to put the insulation panels directly under the metal. He says you should shoot for maximum air flow under the tin to reduce sweating and rusting.

It's the air flow that brings in the humidity and moisture that caused the sweating therefore you need airflow to dry it out. If you have a solid deck with ice and water shield under laying Grace Ice & Water Shield 36 in. x 75 ft. (225 sq. ft.) Roll Roofing Underlayment in Black-532 - The Home Depot that will stop the moisture and you can put insulation up under the roof decking for attic temperature and sound control.

The added benefit of this is when large hail hits the metal roof on a solid deck it will not ding.
