The trusses have arrived but we had major rain today. Looks like Monday before these go up.



We also ordered the four posts to support the front/rear porch corners. These will be 8" square tube, 1/4" walls and 20' tall. About 5' will be buried in concrete and the porch decks will be poured around them. The "spread" support is still an open issue, so we may add something to this before it is finalized.

So far, this is where we left off before the rain.

As mentioned earlier, we had started out intending to use scissor trusses. I like this design better because it keeps the interior ceiling and roof pitch the same.

different than what I was trying to imagine. so these cover front porch to back, or just across the great room outer walls?

They cover the full run - porches and great room - about 75' in total.

I like that design. Will you use batt insulation in those scissor truss or blown in

No batt, or loose fill. Insulation will be sprayed.

Ok now that there are some pictures I have an idea to help with your spreading concerns. Drill all your trusses for a cable then turn buckle them all together. Once you get inside the house if the roof lines up with the other trusses run your cable into them 4-8 trusses deep. I'm thinking of 3-4 cables per side. Make it move as a whole.

Now that's a really great idea! But .... you're thinking of spread in the wrong direction

The spread concern is for the outward pressure on the porch corner posts. A single cable between these posts would most likely solve the problem. What I "want" to hear is .... 8" square tube, 1/4" wall, 20' steel posts, buried in 4 feet of concrete WILL NOT SPREAD. I have given some thought to core-filling the posts with cement as well.
