Having trouble finding that cover on the right side of the flywheel the manual is talking about, and just exactly what they are talking about on this second part of adjustment. Can anyone give me some pointers. Thanks.

Wish I knew as well. I did my 50 hour service and skipped this step but it needs to be done soon. My friend is a mechanic at a equipment rental place he is going to help me. I'll give you an update when I'm done.

Believe it or not, the cover is behind the right side loader bracket. Brilliant design. You remove the loader, then the bracket, and finally the cover. Rotate the engine until one of the adjustment screws is in the opening, loosen the locknut and turn the screw in until it touches the pressure plate, then back it out the proper amount and re-lock the nut.

No need to take the loader and bracket off. Adjustment if needed can be done at the pedal under the "floor board" for lack of words. Service guy at dealer said the only reason you would need to adjust the nut at the flywheel is for the PTO. He said the only reason you would take the loader and bracket off means your going to replace the clutch. Hope that helps.

That is, of course, why this second check/adjustment is done. When the manual was written, was it not considered that many, if not most, L3800s would have a FEL? Have you checked/adjusted yours? I do use my PTO a lot and assume some adjustment might be needed.

The service guy told me if I didn't have any trouble with engaging / disengaging the PTO he wouldn't mess with it. I use my loader and box blade more than anything, but my neighbor uses his bush hog and finish mower 3 days a week and has a little over 200 hours on his machine L3800DST. His PTO engaging / disengaging works fine. No issues.
