i need a lil input from those that may have any an opinion on a theory i have as to why my hydraulics are actin up. changed all the fluids. drained out almost 9 gals of nasty tranny/hydraulic fluid. the system only calls for 5.8 gals. i pulled the tranny filter n cleaned it good as new. it was extremely nasty n plugged up. the hydraulics responded to the slightest touch of the lever. i only ran it bout half hours total time after that. when i fired it up again. i noticed it wasnt responding very well. n was hesitating a lilbit. it got worse n worse inna bout 15 minutes time i had lost all hydraulic lift. sept when id get off n let it idle, i noticed when ever it felt like it all a sudden the hydraulics would lift. however i did have a bushhog on the back lifted up max n took the hub n blade off to sharpen em. the hydraulic held the bush hog up for 2 days. didnt drop not 1 lilbit. it just dont wanna come back up. here's my theory, do u think the filter may have gotten plugged up again. im thinkin ta check that before i take the back off by the lift arms n look inside. altho i have no idea what id be looking at. if anyone has any theories or input id luv ta hear it.

You may have stirred up a lot of crud in there or, there may be air in the lines. I don't know a whole bunch about your specific tractor but- these are the things off the top of my head.

The filter is where I'd start. Cheap and easy fix. I think the hydraulic filter is a NAPA 1268

i agree, the fastest lest expensive start. the filter is a mesh metal screen, that can be cleaned.

HaHaHa. Sure. It's an old MF. A 1965 Massey Ferguson 135 Continental. It's getting a Hollywood Makeover. -robert

Isn't there an external spin on canister filter at your left heel (when seated on the tractor)? It should be on the housing. My 1983 1710 has a spin on filter there.

Nope, the 1" hydraulic line runs frum the pump up front by the radiator back to the right heel. where theres a plate on the lower side. loosed the bolt at the pump end of the line, then take out the 4 bolts holdin the tranny plate on. that plate is the plate the filter lives on. pull off the plate, remove the filter. clean it n reassemble.

user jcjetro may be able to help you with the hyd issue.. but i'd be inclined to pull that screen again and check it to see if it was nasty again. if it had lots of water in it ( like 4gallons.. ).. it may have a ton of emulsified crud or biologicals in it.. if the filter is nasty.. look the oil over.. if it is nasty again.. i'd flush her with a solvent and detergent addative and then drian, cleant he sump up, and then refill after cleaning the screen again.

if that system uses an unloader valve setup.. it may have stuck from crud. ( i havn't looked at the hyd valving on that type of machine.. it's too new for me.. :) )

Oh My. thanks u. i see u have me on the ryt track. tinkerin on tractors is somewhat new ta me. i aint tinker stupit tho. i do cars, motorcycles, etc. just never tractors.
whats the name? how much do i get? n were do i get this solvent to flush the tranny system. what detergant do u recommend. n do i mix the solvent and detergent or 1 at a time? were's the sump located? were do i find it? sump? as in the tranny fluid pickup?

the solvent *I* use is called diesel ;)

the detergent *I* uses is atf -f or dex/merc fluid.

some people grasp their heart and faint when talking about flusing a tractor sump with diesel, as if it has never been done and will cause the machine to blow up.

there are plenty of solvent choices out there.. mineral spirits, kerosene.. etc.. all them are related to diesel anyway.. kero is #1.. diesel is #2 oils.. etc.

i'd steer away from harsh solvents like varsol, acetone, laquer thinner, carb and barke cleaner.. they can make some seals soft.

if i have a sump that's been wet.. i usually add in a lil diesel, a lil atf, and a lil 90% rubbing alcohol.. agitate and drain...

thats me. you will get people with other opinions.. including those telling you that diesel will ruin the tracor annd cause 7ys bad luck to your familly, and cause sterility in all the males on your side of the family if you use it.

so your call.. just saying what i do to maintain my fleet of tractors ( none of which have blown up! )

Howdy lilred and welcome to TBN:)

I got your email and sent you a few suggestions. I can try to help you out here or thru email. I suppose here other folks can chime in collectively. Did you get my message? Whatever you do make sure not to run the tractor for extended period. Need to figure out what's going on. The hyd pump will turn anytime engine is on. You sure don't want to destroy the pump by running it dry or with cruds and solids going through it. It'll destroy them gears.

he's asking the MODERATOR to move this thread into a NH tractor forum so that you guys can continue discussing that 1700 and get it fixed. that is a NH topic.. not a new member topic...

Soundguy,

I have sent him a pm and identified all components of the hyd system, reservoir, suction screen, pump , lift piston components minus relief device, lift spool valve details and two direct links to my work when I overhauled my system. I told him about all the pics I have so identification of components should not be difficult going thru write up and associated pictures. He can here or thru pm ask me any and all questions and as long as I understand the nature of question clearly.

Ummmm...might want to check out Lilredfox's profile...photo there gives clues to her pseudonym.

well, Him or her I don't know. Checked the profile as you suggested but see a 1700 and a female person, hardly enough to draw any conclusion though. At any rate that does not matter. I have sent the individual a lot of information to sort out. I'm not sure if lilred has enough background in the subject matter.
