When I recently negotiated the deal on 3032e the dealer offered to throw in filters and fluids needed for the 50-hour service. I'm only at 8 hours but needed to go by the dealer for something else yesterday so I thought I'd pick up the 50-hr. parts while there. When we looked up what was needed for the 50-hr service we found nothing was needed, lubing and a check of axle oil is all that is recommended. JD doesn't recommend an engine oil change until 200 Hr and a HST oil change at 400 hr.

Can anyone tell me what JD is thinking? If the oil that came in the tractor is original how can JD justify leaving what amounts to break-in oil in for 200+ hours?

BTW, the dealer would be true to his word if he supplied nothing but is supplying filters and fluids for both engine and HST changes despite JD's recommendations. Probably a smart move since he'd have to deal with warranty work.

This has been discussed before...there is even variations WITHIN JD...Sticker under the hood says one thing, Owners manual says another, and dealer reccomends yet a 3rd option... IMO my dealer's suggestions was PRECISELY what I was thinking as well...Heres what my dealer reccomended and what I did on my 3520..

-Change Engine oil & filter at 50 hours...Refill with JD "Break In Oil"
-Change Transmission Oil/Filters & Front Axle Oil at 100 hours.
-Change Engine oil at 100 Hours...Refill with oil of your choice..I choose to use the JD Plus-50 Synthetic 0w40

For the engine, I changed the oil and filter at 50 hrs, refilled with some leftover Rotella dino 15w-40 CI-4+ oil, ran that for another 50 hrs, and then changed the oil and filter and refilled with Amsoil's HD Diesel and Marine 15w-40 synthetic oil.

For the transmission and front axle, I changed the fluid and filter at 50 hrs, and refilled with low viscosity hygard. I would get the fluid out of the axle right at 50 hrs as a lot of owners have found metal shavings from the casting process inside the axle housing. You don't want that stuff running around in the oil for longer than it needs to be.

Why would you refill with "break in" oil?

I changed the oil and filter at 50 hours.

I just hit 100 hours and am planning to change the hyd. oil today. I didn't think to change the front axle oil too but after reading this thread I think I will change it too.

I changed all fluids at 50 hours except coolant.
Just to add a little more confusion to the break-in oil debate, my 2720 manual says to change the oil at 50 hours and "do not use break-in oils" and I think the 2720 and 3032E have the same engine.

Why would you refill with "break in" oil?

Couple reasons...
A) Dealer service shop reccomended I use the Break-In oil
B) JD Says the same thing:
https://jdparts.deere.com/partsmkt/document/english/pmac/5452_fb_BreakInOil.htm

Factory fill oil IS break in oil...so if the reccomendation is to change the oil at 100/200 hours (depending where you look) for the first time...Deere wants you to run Break in oil for at LEAST 100 hours...(backed up by the lit on Break In oil)...

I'm suggesting its in the dealer's best interest to provide me with the materials to do the filter services at 50 hours even if JD doesn't recommend it. That way there's less likelihood of later failure and warranty hassles for him to deal with.

Am I missing something?

Good to know, thanks. I'd expect factory oil to be break-in oil. I would have never thought that it would take 100 hours to break an engine in. I found another reference where Yanmar didn't recommend use of synthetic oil until after 250 hrs to ensure proper break-in.

At the link provided for the break-in oil they say "John Deere" engines specifically. I'm wondering if these means Yanmar engines or not. From what I can tell on their website the larger engines aren't made by Yanmar.
