Octane rating for a gasser is more of an anti-knock/ping/run on rating. the higher the rating, the HARDER it is to ignite the fuel. That's why some super machines and hi-powered road racers use 100 octane fuel to burn in their high compression , high rpm engines.
Yes, higher octane is harder to burn at high temps and under high compression therefor causing less pre-detonation on gas powered vehicles, but the higher octane fuel is easier to burn under cold temps due to the lower flash point just as diesel is easier to burn at cold temps with higher cetane value.
