The dog food wasn't made in China it was the ingredients .

Does it matter if the Chinese supply the melamine for our food or supply the melamine and install it in the food?

Either way, it's morally reprehensible and downright criminal.

3 people directly involved got the death sentence. 3 of the company executives received 5-15 years. The 66 yr old chair woman received life.

I always liked a nice hint of melamine in my food.

Kind like safron or pine nuts, it just adds that extra little "kick".

Onan parts are still Made in The U.S.A. I see fresh stock every week and the parts still have the look, feel and label that says, WE MADE IT HERE in the US! I don't know how much longer that will last. Onan has a huge inventory of many parts already made here so we are OK for the next few years but after that?

I walk through the parts room at my local NAPA and see boxes with China, Vietnam, Brazil, Mexico etc. I refused to put Chinese brake pads on my car last week and finally found some made in the US but it's getting harder every day to do that..

Something that is still largely manufactured in the US is prepared food products. Now obviously not all of the products are made in the US or with ingredients from the US, but I can tell you about the factories that I'm familiar with.

All of the salt we use is from domestic sources; probably 90% or more of our minor ingredients (ammonium bicarbonate, molasses, corn syrup, malt, etc.) is domestic. I know that we do get some figs from Spain, ).

Now I know that bakeries are not considered heavy industries, but our plants employ anywhere from 60 to about 700 people at a given location. Take care.

Sounds like good news on the food front. I bet when the gas tank is empty and the bakery still has bread, people'll be walkin witha smile. Fantasy?

These sentences were nothing more than token penalties doled out to BS the world that China is dealing with the problem. These examples were not done with the intent of getting Wang Chung Enterprises executives to tow the line and be responsible corporate citizens.

Of course the sentences aren't so token if you are the unlucky one singled out by your Gummint to receive them.

I agree. This was a cheap PR gig for the west. If China truly cared about the well being of the rest of the world, they would immediately put a stop to devaluing their yaun. ( China's Devalued Yuan: Hu Won't Budge; Bush Doesn't Get It - NAM )

By artificially lowering the value of their currency, China places it's manufacturers at a competitive advantage over American companies.

wow. this is a shocker, esp coming from a left-leaning administration.. often they are the ones justifying offshoring of u.s. manufacturing as "aide" for poor countries.

Last Thursday (Jan 22, 2009) Timothy Geithner, wrote that Obama believes China is "manipulating" its currency, which American manufacturers say Beijing does to make its goods cheaper for U.S. consumers and American products more expensive in China.

I wouldn't hold my breath that they actually follow through and take action:

Although Geithner said China is "manipulating its currency," he suggested Thursday that now might not be the right time to brand Beijing as a currency manipulator under U.S. trade law, which could lead to U.S. trade sanctions against imports from China.

Now days its good enough to just talk about the problem.
