Well, I don't know about Botswanian hydraulic motors, but Sampo in Jyskä, Suomi, is nearly Lapland, and makes a very nice range of wheel motors and hydraulic drives for tractors and forestry.

OK, no Laps using reindeer to power the boring machines, but....

For PT, and indeed other manufacturers, I try to be Zen about it. They do what they do, even if it doesn't make sense to us. Outside of the computer industry, I have never had a manufacturer actually take advice on design or redesign, but perhaps you have been luckier.

I think they switched from pumps on both ends to pumps in front of the motor only for a few reasons...

Only one engine mount for the pumps is needed.

They did not have to cut the fan shroud on one side of the engine to get to the shaft.

It moves the engine completely to the rear of the engine compartment. This allowed the battery to be mounted up where you can get to it and also moved more weight back towards the rear for added lift capacity.

I agree. The extra weight in the back makes a big difference in handling while carying a load.

Have the Robin powered PT-425s always had a PT built muffler? Looking at the engine compartment photo on the PT web site, it looks like they wouldn't have been able to put the pumps all on one end without the custom made muffler. Maybe once they started welding up their own mufflers, they realized that would allow them to rearrange the engine compartment.

After looking at the photo and remembering how far things have to be moved in order to separate the Lovejoy couplers, I am inclined to agree with Phils on the $40 R&R charge. They probably don't know what they are getting into.

I just spoke with DJ of DJ's small engine repair. The repair is indeed a warranty repair, however as per a previous post, subaru/robin does not pay for removal and reinstall. DJ said that will cost about 40 bucks. I think that's a pretty reasonable price.

That is probably just an estimate, if not, they will find a way to justify their time. Nobody works for free.

The 16 gauge wire I ran through the tunnel is acceptable according to the instructions that came with the gauge. My gauge is a re-badged Westach non tso'd single probe used in sport and experimental aviation.
