The Life of a Custom Mowing contractor

California grows LOTS of grass and hay. Much of the Alfalfa is exported. Timothy has always costed double. I always preferred a grass hay mix. I don't buy it anymore so I have no dog in this race. Just saying it has tripled in price since 1990. and I'll bet that Timothy or Orchard grass is $30 a...

The Life of a Custom Mowing contractor

Be nice. I just feel that hay has exceeded the market value. I don't keep horses any more. The high cost of quality feed is just one reason. If you don't like your chosen path choose another. Have a nice day.

Hybrid Rotary Cutter Proof of Concept

Very interesting thread. A lot of R&D went into this project and it's nice to read a complete explanation of what is happening when the wheel row fails to stand up and get cut. I have 50 hp so I primarily use an offset flail. Higher blade speed and slower ground speed allows time for more...

    Cowboy Coffee? Mmmmmmm

If you have the time and patience to make cowboy coffee daily then your living right. ;) I use the Keurig coffee maker for a sub 1 minute cup of coffee, black and strong.

The Life of a Custom Mowing contractor

In the 80s and 90s we paid $6-7 for a 3 string 110 pound bale of horse hay. Today that bale is $20-25. Who's screwing who, really?

front mount brush hog and tractor

I have a BH on the SS and a flail and BH for the tractor. These machines are 2 very different animals with the same 50 hp. I can't imagine trying to manage a BH on the front of the tractor. The SS allows visibility for constant angle and elevation adjustments needed not possible on the front...

I Went To Purchase A New Mini-Excavator And This Happened.....

7 hours is probably 1/1000 of its useful life. I once bought a 2 yr old rental unit with 1500 hrs on it. It had dents and scratches on every panel. I used it for 14 yrs before downsizing with only a starter and battery repair. I think you just let the machine you wanted get away. I get it you...

How about I bid $7k for your new fence, you agree and when it's all done demand an additional $3k for living expenses on top

Oh no, my toolbox is inadequate. :(

I replaced the plastic Kubota box with a metal Amazon box. Bought a 2 pound sledge and 12" crescent at HF. Removed the hammer handle and welded it to the crescent wrench. Now it's a do all tool.

    Restaurants adding fees

I read more and more complaints about restaurants adding fees to your food bill like gratuity and now cost of living. Basically the price they tell you a burger costs is not the price you will pay. When I grew up a tip was money you gave a service worker for a job well done. It was something...

What did you buy this week?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CVSJ8YBX?ref=fed_asin_title I haven't used it yet. But my buddy who is a excellent mechanic with lots of old equipment swore by it for preventing the problems caused by ethanol gas in small engines. In the last year I have replaced the carburetor in a weed wacker, a...

Son is buying a Bobcat, advice?

I paid 10k for my 773 Bobcat maybe 10 yrs ago with more hrs and new tires, recent fluids/filters, a bucket and forks. It's been a great machine. I replaced a hose, a seat, and a battery in 10 yrs. The Kubota 4 banger is a great motor, nearly bombproof. GL with the project. Sounds like a good deal.
