Hey guys newbe here. I'm looking to buy my first 4wd tractor and I was looking at a ford 1720. They guy wants $4200. BUT. The pto makes some kind of noise when it is engaged and it has 6000 hrs. I'm not too concerned with the pto but I'm hesitant on the hours. Is that too many hours? What is the life expectancy on these?

Good Afternoon Ihatethewinter,
Welcome to TBN !

6000 hrs is quite a bit but if it was taken care of it should still have a descent amount of life left. My MF 1040 is about the same age and I only have a third of those hours on my machine.

I would suggest that you find someone more knowledgable than yourself to look at this machine, and give it a good evaluation, listen to the PTO noise, possibly a bearing. The $4200 sounds high to me with those hours.

Things that you want to look at are the general overall condition of the tractor, does it look like it was taken care of etc.

Here is a link to that machine on Tractor Data

Thanks. He was at $5500 until the pto started making that noise. He dropped the price to $4800 and now at $4200. He says it runs great but the way I look at it is that's still 6000 hrs of wear and tear no matter how good he took care of it.

I would want to make sure that all the parts that might be necessary to fix the PTO are still available.

You say you are not concerned about the PTO, so maybe you don't intend to use PTO powered implements on it, such as a rotary mower. But a tractor without a working PTO would be a no-deal for me.

What I meant was I wasn't concerned that fixing it would be an issue. I wound up passing on the tractor. Just too many hours for my liking
