Well This has been in the planning stages for months but welding just began today. So it looks like its official.

The design is mostly based on Ferguson's (Thank you for your detailed pics!)

I am building it with three of my neighbors. We're all hoping to cut down on a little bit of our labor this upcoming year. If everything goes as planned, with 24" logs (not typical) and a 60 second cycle time (hopefully generous) this thing could shoot out 3.5 cords per hour.

Here are the plans / specs

-24" dia log capacity
-16' long log capacity
-24" splitter capacity
-2-way, 4-way, 6-way, 8-way wedge (hydraulically actuated)
-30" harvester bar / .404 chain / 15 tooth sprocket / run hydraulically
-22 HP Kohler hooked to a 18 GPM pump to run the saw, infeed, wedge lift, log clamp (not shown), infeed rack lift
-18 HP B&S hooked to a 28/7 GPM 2 stage pump to run the splitter
-2 motors allow for simultaneous cutting and splitting
-2x2 square tubing 1/4" thick wall for frame

Wedge in 8-way mode with 24" log shown

Wedge in 2-way mode with 24" log shown

There are a few things that are up in the air. You see that the saw floats, same with the engine and hydraulic reservoir, no supports around the splitter section. Some things will be engineered as we go.

Sounds interesting, but all pics except the conveyor are broke

Very ambitious project, hope it comes together like you plan it. Good luck!

Neat project! Curious how much $$$ it will take to construct.

Look forward to watching it progress. What CAD program did you use?

Should be somewhere between $6000 - $8000 depending on what we can find used vs purchase new.

I'm crossing my fingers that it will work as well as I expect. But for a commercial unit with this capacity, I don't think you'd be able to touch it for much less than $40,000. We'll see.

I used the free version of SketchUp to model it. Can't go wrong for the money.

Hydraulic questions posted here.

Will post some updated design renderings this evening or tomorrow.
